Turkey: The first Turkish car will be hybrid or electric 2017-11-22
The fact is not very well known, but Turkey has become a big country of the automobile. Following free trade agreements with the European Union, Fiat, Ford, Renault, Toyota (to name only 4) have established factories in Anatolia, and the result is that Turkey now manufactures 50% of cars more than Italy. And it seems that Turkey will manufacture more cars than France under 5 years. A paradox though, is that even Turkey produces a lot of cars, there is no Turkish brand as yet.
After several years of study, President Erdogan organized at the beginning of the month the creation of a joint venture between several leaders of the Turkish industry, with the declared project to design a 100% Turkish car. There is already a calendar, where we see the design completed in 2019, for a start in production in 2021.And because Turkey has ambition, it will not be created to compete with the Dacia Sandero, but to make a car either electric or hybrid.
The magazine Auto News recalls that Turkey had acquired the production license of the Saab 9-3 electrified by National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS). But the assumption of taking back this old base is cruelly lacking in credibility. It is hard to see how one could make a competitive auto in 2021 on a base that will be more than 25 years old.
The future hybrid or electric would be an original car, intended primarily for the Turkish market, but also for Europe. Given the complexity of hybrid systems, the most likely is that this future model will be an electric, small or compact, competing with the Renault Zoe or the Nissan Leaf.
