Fiat Chrysler joins Intel and BMW for autonomous driving. 2017-08-16
Last year, BMW announced a partnership with the giant Intel computing company and the specialist of advanced cameras Mobileye for the development of autonomous driving. Today Fiat Chrysler Group joins them to reduce the costs of the technology that requires huge investment.
This morning, the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Group (FCA) announced its entry into the project initiated last year between BMW, Intel and Mobileye for the development of autonomous driving. The Italo-American will collaborate with BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce for what is today one of the main axes of development of the automobile industry, with the electric car.
At first, we might be surprised to see Fiat Chrylser turn to BMW as the group had already sealed a partnership with Waymo, the autonomous car of Google, developed by the special division "Alphabet" of Silicon Valley. Except that this agreement does not include exclusivity, which leaves the field open to Fiat Chrysler to find other allies.
It would be interesting to know whether the exchange of information between Fiat Chrysler and Google will not be used indirectly to the other side in the partnership with BMW and Intel, which is a direct competitor of his neighbor Google in the design of autonomous driving software.
This alliance is in any case further evidence of the desire of Sergio Marchionne, the boss of FCA, who openly stated for several months his intention to associate with big names of the automobile.
