Volkswagen confirms the arrival of its new "Combi" 2017-08-21
The emblematic vehicle of the 70s will make its big comeback in 2022. The carmaker Volkswagen has confirmed the commercialization of a new version of his legendary car, emblematic of the hippie movement, on the sidelines of the Peeble Beach contest, and a few weeks before the show of the Frankfurt motorway. Volkswagen had stopped production of its car in January 2014.
This new model of 360 horsepower will be electric and will have an autonomous driving feature. According to the Caradisiac site, it will also be available in utility version.
Electrical and autonomous
It is not the first time the brand has announced the arrival of a new version of its flagship model. In January 2016, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the manufacturer presented BUDD-e, "a new concept of long-distance electric vehicle".
Then at the Detroit auto show, the version as it is presented today, ID Buzz. Thanks to a modular battery system, VW wants to propose several autonomy offers of 400 to 600 km, allowing the customer to choose between radius of action and performances. It is the same strategy that brands such as Tesla have put in place. It must be said that since the scandal of Dieselgate, the brand is trying to improve its image forward its communication on the electric.
The Combi, called "Kombi" in Brazil or "Bulli" in Germany, was born from the glance of a Dutch importer, Ben Pon. During a visit to the Volkswagen headquarters in Wolfsburg (north) in 1947, he noticed a vehicle tinkered by factory workers to load equipment. He makes a sketch. VW started mass production in March 1950, creating the second model in the young history of the group after the Beetle.
