The European Union and Japan close to an agreement about automotive spare parts 2017-06-19
The European Union would be ready to abolish import taxes on most automotive spare parts produced in Japan.
According to a Japanese colleague, the EU would abolish import taxes on most car parts of Japanese origin. In exchange, Japan would abolish import taxes on ... Agricultural products such as pork, wine and cheese, which is easy when we know the opposition of the Japanese against the opening of their Markets to foreign competition.
This abolition of tariffs on spare parts is carried out in the framework of a free trade agreement between the European Union and Japan which is to be completed in broad outline at the beginning of July. Negotiations began in 2013.
The European Union imposes import duties of 4% on spare parts and 10% on cars imported from Japan. The EU would be ready to eliminate these customs tariffs on 90% of spare parts as soon as the free trade agreement comes into operation. However, the EU and Japan still face duties on imported cars. Japan wants to abolish import taxes in seven years, while the European Union wants to wait more than ten years.
